Lion

The lion (Panthera leo) is one of the most recognizable animals on the planet. Often called the “king of the jungle,” it actually lives mostly in savannas and grasslands. It is the only truly social big cat, and for thousands of years it has been a symbol of strength, courage, and royalty in cultures around the world.

Appearance

Lions are the second-largest cats after tigers. Adult males typically weigh between 150 and 250 kg, while females are smaller, usually 120–180 kg. Their short coat ranges from light buff to golden brown, and the tail ends in a dark tuft of hair.

The most famous feature is the male’s mane. It makes the lion look larger and more intimidating to rivals, and it also protects the neck during fights. A darker, fuller mane is usually a sign of a healthy, mature male.

Habitat and Range

Today, most wild lions live in sub-Saharan Africa, in open savannas, grasslands, and dry woodlands. A small population of Asiatic lions survives in India, in and around Gir National Park in Gujarat. In the past, lions roamed across Africa, southern Europe, the Middle East, and much of Asia.

Life in a Pride

Lions live in family groups called prides. A pride usually includes several related females, their cubs, and one or a few adult males. The females form the core of the group and often stay in the same pride for life, while young males leave when they reach maturity and later try to take over a pride of their own.

Males defend the territory by patrolling, scent-marking, and roaring. A lion’s roar can be heard up to 8 km away and tells other lions exactly who owns the land.

Hunting and Diet

Lions are apex predators that feed mainly on large hoofed animals such as zebras, wildebeest, antelopes, and buffalo. Females do most of the hunting and often work together as a team, stalking prey and surrounding it before the final attack. Lions also scavenge and will readily steal kills from hyenas and other predators.

Although they are powerful, lions are built for short bursts of speed rather than long chases. To save energy, they rest for up to 20 hours a day and are most active at dusk and during the night.

Cubs and Lifespan

After a pregnancy of about 110 days, a lioness gives birth to a litter of usually two to four cubs. Females in a pride often raise their young together and may even nurse each other’s cubs. In the wild, lions typically live 10–14 years, while in protected environments they can live beyond 20.

Conservation Status

Lions are listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN. Their numbers have dropped sharply over the last century because of habitat loss, conflict with livestock farmers, poaching, and a decline in natural prey. National parks, community-based conservation programs, and anti-poaching efforts play a key role in protecting the remaining populations.
